The village of Crimond is situated in farmland half way between the fishing ports of Fraserburgh and Peterhead and close to the St Fergus Gas Terminal. The village is world famous because the “Crimond Tune” for the 23rd Psalm was written by Jessie Seymour Irvine, the daughter of the manse. The church itself is renowned for an error which resulted in it having 61 minutes painted on the clock face. Many visitors pass through Crimond as they go to the nearby RSPB Loch of Strathbeg Nature Reserve. Crimond is well known in the world of motor sport as it is the most northerly stock car track. It is here that former Formula 1 world champion driver Jim Clark began his career.
Crimond Primary School is non-denominational and co-educational, providing education for children aged 3 – 12, from ante-preschool nursery through to P7. We do not teach in the Gaelic medium but we do teach French from Primary 1. Due to the fact that our school was originally a Junior Secondary School we have the benefit of lots of large and spacious classrooms. The ground floor of the school building has four classrooms, one presently being used as a playroom and another as a Music and Drama room. There is also a large nursery, with its own entrance and secure play area. We have a well-stocked library, a hall with stage and a dining room plus kitchen. Upstairs there are four classrooms, one of which houses the Dyslexia Support Centre whilst another is an art and lifeskills room. The Office and Head Teacher’s room are located near the front entrance. The school kitchen supplies Crimond School with meals produced in line with the Scottish Government's Schools (Health Promotion & Nutrition) (Scotland) Act 2007 and also caters for Rathen, Inverallochy and St Combs schools.
We are fortunate in having a large gym hall laid out for netball and badminton. Likewise the school playground is marked out for football, netball and cycling. The playing field behind the school has a football pitch. We are also very pleased to have access to a community all-weather multi-sports area in the school grounds.
Our playground has an array of play equipment and a shed full of loose play parts.
Our school is part of the Fraserburgh Cluster alongside Fraserburgh Academy, ten other primary schools, a special school and several bases which provide specialist additional learning services. We work together on shared priorities for improvement, sharing resources and good practice. On leaving Crimond Primary School our pupils transfer to Fraserburgh Academy. In the Fraserburgh CSN, all services operate within an integrated framework in order to ensure that each child has the fullest opportunity to maximise his or her potential. Some of Crimond’s pupils choose to go to Peterhead Academy with whom the school maintains close links.
The school makes good use of parent helpers in the classroom, in the library, out in the garden, at Golden Time and on any school outings. The school has a very supportive Parent Partnership, which supports school improvement activities and raises additional funds to provide many extras for the pupils in the school. These funds support Christmas parties, travel expenses for educational visits, sports medals and visits by science, music and theatre groups. They also help to pay for playground equipment, extra school materials and special items such as shoe bags for the new intake and French dictionaries for the P7 leavers.
Crimond School is very much part of the local and wider community. Senior citizens are invited into school for special events and our pupils are regular visitors to Crimond House Nursing Home and Strathbeg Sheltered Housing. We engage with local businesses to enhance the learning of our pupils. We are delighted to be an ApacheUK Link School and benefit from substantial funding to promote the learning and teaching of science. TOTAL UK and Score are also involved in the life of our school. The RSPB at the Loch of Strathbeg are a valuable resource right on our doorstep and we make good use of their facilities and the team there are a good support to our Environmental Studies programme.
Community links are a valued part of school life. The school is used for a range of community activities, including after school sports and activity clubs. The Head Teacher is invited to attend Community Council meetings as well as church and Resident Association meetings.
OUR HISTORY
Crimond School is a former Junior Secondary School, which was built in 1963 comprising two parts joined by a long central corridor. One part housed the Primary Department and the office while the other housed the Secondary Department and school canteen.
For the first eight years pupils stayed at Crimond School until they had completed the first two years of secondary education before transferring to Fraserburgh Academy. However, in 1971 it became a Primary School with four teachers and 92 pupils.
After 1974, the school population increased with the advent of North Sea Gas but has, in recent years, dropped again.
In 1994 a nursery class was also established. It is a bright, stimulating, learning environment accommodating a maximum of 30 children for 5 morning and 5 afternoon sessions a week. The nursery has its own entrance, cloakroom and toilets as well as a safe, enclosed play area.
